DC Holiday Delights, 2009: Part 1

Submitted by Maureen on December 4, 2009 – 7:30 pmNo Comment

neon_treeNow that the holiday season is upon up, there’s a slew of family-friendly shows, exhibits, and displays to put on your calendar. From Elmo…to ice-sculpture extravaganza…to the Rockettes–the DC holiday calendar is full of great memory-making opportunities! Over the next several days, we will be pointing you toward some of the best of DC holiday fare.

First in our series is a list of some of the more budget-friendly attractions that will last throughout the entire season–and which do not require making any squirmy members sit still through a long show!

Holiday Lights

Some of my own best holiday memories are of simply driving around with the kids checking out gorgeous light displays. Usually free–and always full of ooh’s, ah’s, and laughter. Just how big can an inflatable snowman be, after all, before it starts to resemble the Stay-Puff marshmallow man from the movie Ghostbusters?

Anyway, wouldn’t it be nice if someone would put together one comprehensive list of all the holiday lights attractions in the DC metro area? Well, the editors at Our-Kids.com have done just that; and here’s the link. Check it out!

Santa Sightings

Oh, and while you’re on the Our-Kids site, take a look at their marvelous list of official Santa appearances as well.  Have breakfast or dinner with everyone’s favorite, philanthropic, polar elf.  And perhaps his lovely wife as well.  Or just arrange for the traditional mall visit.  We don’t know how he manages to be at high schools, malls, and churches all at the same time–but we’re so happy to see that Santa is not neglecting DC this December.

The Ultimate Ice Sculpture…All 2 Million Pounds of it!

Sure, we’ve all seen ice sculptures–but how many of us can actually say we’ve walked through a fantasy land of ice structures?  Head to the Gaylord National Resort (National Harbor, MD) for ICE until Jan. 10, 2010–and discover a world unlike any other. Stroll with the family through a winter wonderland made entirely of ice! Explore ten different holiday scenes made from two million pounds of ice, including a life-sized Santa’s Workshop, a penguin village — and even ice slides that stand more than two stories tall!

Note: If you join the Gaylord National Resort as an overnight guest you’ll be treated to a host of winter wonderland activities. You can also visit ICE™ Monday to Thursday before 4pm without an overnight stay. $19.99/adults; $13/children.
Please visit the website at ICE™
