Women Safety Reminders & Tips

Today, I was doing a waiting service for a client. Our client arranged for four service repair men to come and do repairs for the majority of the morning. One of the repairmen was from Kenmore* (concealing the name of the actual repair company); he was contracted here to fix my client’s refrigerator’s ice maker. Everything went just as planned. He was in his full work attire. All the other service men came and did their work and left. Then, the door bell rang again. I answer, and it was a man, and I asked if he was here to do the base boards? He replied with a slightly inaudible reply, which alerted me. He said, “No, I’m from kenmore.*”

I was shocked because a man just came, in a totally different uniform and tools. I quickly said, “A Kenmore* repair man was just here, no thank you!” He looked disoriented, and said, “How could that be?” I quickly responded, “No, Thank You!” and shut the door!

This incident had me very shaken up. I began recalling all the advice, news reports, and statistics about women who are victimized by phony service repair men. Thus prompting me to alert my clients via social media, email, and this post. I have complied a list of Savvy Safety Tips for Women

WHEN EXITING ANY BUILDING, WHETHER HOME, OFFICE, STORE OR OTHER PUBLIC PLACE , look in all directions as you exit. When walking back to your car, try to walk in the middle of the driving area rather than close to parked cars. Avoid parking near large vehicles.

Don’t walk alone at night, unless absolutely necessary; if so tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back
Don’t assume you are safe during the daylight also! Take the same precautious as you would during night travel.

Build your core strength: Take a self defense, kickboxing, or body-building class

WHILE TRAVELING , put your business address on luggage tags. Carry a map of the area to which you are visiting. IN HOTELS OR MOTELS, keep the door dead bolted and drapes drawn at night.

Yell “Fire!” instead of “Help!”

Tie your hair back when traveling alone, and keep your purse close and with as short straps as possible, they have been used as handcuffs

Remain Calm! The best defense is to act UNEXPECTEDLY, only successful if you remain calm and alert!
Carry a whistle or air horn on your key ring, always ASSUME HOSTILE INTENT from strangers, KEEP YOUR DISTANCE (at least 10 to 12 feet away), and remember that MANY ATTACKS ARE PRECEDED BY ONE OF THREE QUESTIONS: “May I use your phone?” “Do you have the time?” and “Do you know how to get to …?” Never stop to answer such questions. It’s okay to be rude. As soon as someone makes you stop or do something on which you had not planned, he has taken control of the situation. Keep moving and note avenues of escape.

Get an Alarm System: Both electronic and alive (A dog!) Check Windows and Door Locks and Latches habitually!

Stay Alert and Focused: Make a habit to remember all your surroundings including cars and people around you. Look for idle vehicles/people; If people start milling around you, it could a set-up for a mugging.

Memorize Your Defense Systems: Know yourself, how do you react in a crisis situation? Do you scream, cry, freeze? How would you defend yourself?

Carry self defense products on your Key Ring at all times such as mace, pepper spray, stun gun, personal alarm or TASER.
Carry your keys in HANDS at all Times!! They are a weapon too!

Distract and Divert!!! If you are being held up and they want your wallet, get it out and throw it in the opposite direction of you QUICKLY, then turn around and run, ideally into the street, and begin calling attention by saying “Fire!” or “Stop It” loudly, these phrases command quicker attention
